When I teach ancient law, the topic of "blood feud" is a fundamental concept that illustrates why regularized and uniform legal structure very important for social stability. As a strong leader or state takes control over a land, a simple legal code is of put into place. This legal structure allows greater control over interpersonal conflict as well as goes far to remove ongoing feuds over land, former abuses, and murder.
